My Thoughts: This was the first KISS tribute album, from 1994. Gene and Paul managed to get some pretty popular bands to cover some of their songs for this album. Several, which would have made a much better album than what we have, did not appears. Such as Megadeth, Nikki Sixx, and Stone Temple Pilots with Ozzy Osbourne on vocals (for "War Machine."). However, we did get some tracks that made the 5.99 I paid for it all worth it.. but some, which I will get around too, made me want to break things in anger. I guess the album was ok, it's an interesting collector's item for KISS fans. I will be listing the song titles with the band performing the songs to the side of the title. Read on.
Track List
1. Deuce-Lenny Kravitz
My Rating: 7/10
My Thoughts: This version of Deuce wasn't too bad, but wasn't anything special either. I wasn't a big fan of Stevie Wonder's harmonica during the main riff of the song. Lenny does an ok job of singing the song.... not the best track, but not the worst.
2. Hard Luck Woman-Garth Brooks
My Rating: 10/10
My Thoughts: I'm no Garth Brooks fan, but he does do an awesome version of HLW, which was really a country song to begin with. What makes this vesion that much cooler is that it's actually KISS backing him up on this track! This, sadly,is the only song on the disc that they appear on.
3. She-Anthrax
My Rating: 20/10
My Thoughts: HOLY SHIT!!!!! This track is definitely the best one on the album. Anthrax takes a song that was badass to begin with, and shreds the shit out of it. This track IS definitely a reason to track this CD down. It really is a kickass version, and they don't really change it(except making it heavier, and there is nothing wrong with that at all), making it all the better. Simply badass.
4. Christine Sixteen-Gin Blossoms
My Rating: 9/10
My Thoughts: Gin Blossoms do a pretty good version of Christine Sixteen. The piano doesn't show up until the end of the song, but it is still prett good and otherwise faithful to the original version.
5. Rock and Roll All Nite-Toad the Wet Sprocket
My Rating: 0/10
My Thoughts: Well, Toad the Wet Sprocket sure managed to fuck up the good time I was having listening to this! I can understand bands doing songs their own way, but... you DO NOT turn a rock anthem like RARAN into a fucking folk ballad!!!!! Fuck Toad the Wet Sprocket and fuck this track!
6. Calling Dr. Love-Shandi's Addiction
My Rating: 6/10
My Thoughts: Apparently Shandi's Addiction is a supergroup containing half of Rage Against the Machine and some other dude from a different band. Well, this version is ok. THey don't really play the riff for the song though, which kind of sucks.
7. Goin' Blind-Dinosaur Jr.
My Rating: 7/10
My Thoughts: I had high hopes for this track, even though I had never heard of Dinosaur Jr. before, because this is a KISS song that I really like. Well, the music for it was done well... but the singer fucking sucked. He honestly doesn't sound like he really gives a rat's ass he is even recording a song, let alone a cover of a KISS classic. Other than that it's good.
8. Strutter-Extreme
My Rating: 2/10
My Thoughts: I don' really like this track. For some reason, Extreme must have thought it would be cool to slow the song down to a blues-ish beat, and the result was not good.
9. Plaster Caster-The Lemonheads
My Rating: 10/10
My Thoughts: The Lemonheads do a really good version of this forgotte classic from the Love Gun album. And they keep it true to the original version, which is awesome.
10. Detroit Rock City-The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
My Rating: 8/10
My Thoughts: Well this version would have been a 10, but The Mighty Mighty Bosstones added saxophones onto the song... and replace the guitar solo with a saxophone solo. I don't know why. Other than that it's a really cool version of Detroit Rock City.
Black Diamond-Yoshiki
My Rating: 0/10
My Thoughts: I don't know who Yoshiki is. But, this is an orchestra instrumental version of the song... yeah. Bad idea.
Final Words: I reccommend this CD for diehard fans only. It's not that bad... but it wasn't that great either. I usually find it used for under 10 bucks, so it might not be that bad if you don't have much money on ya.
