In Friday the 13th you have many elements that work and a few minor that don't, so the audience actually is treated to a really good film all in all. The directing in this film actually is quite good, setting a standard for killer in the woods type films for years to come. The slasher genre would never be quite the same after Friday the 13th and all the new stylish kills that it tried to big to the horror screen. This film, Unlike a Halloween, was driven bu unique killing methods, and that sort of is it's calling card. Although many were off screen, they still hit the mark as begin quite good.
Certain scenes in this film were very well shot although again, not the true focus of the film, like say Halloween, but the scene where the 2 youths are in the cabin having sex and their friend is dead above them in a bunk is a very good and clever scene. This is sick and yet we are still morbidly urged on to enjoy the on screen action of two young people having sex. Very interesting and well thought out scene to me.
The acting is pretty well cast, for what they had to work with. Alice's survivor lead character is ok, although I enjoy performances of others in the series later, but she was ok, to me she was a little spacey at times, but it could be all the weed they were smoking..LOL. Anyway Betsy Palmer was great as Mrs. Voorhees. She shines in the performance as a hurting mother bent on vengeance. A physically demanding role at times too it would seem, she did a good job. I also liked how early on the camera angles shoes bits and pieces of her clothing and she looks so much like a man, that we never would have known it was a woman, until we see her at the end. That plot twist was very well done, she (Voorhees) looks harmless but at first you know Alice is wary of her, but Mrs. Voorhees looks so damn nice, she (Alice) is taken in by her niceness.
I have 2 favorite scenes. First of which is one i sort of mentioned already. The scene in the cabin with Kevin Bacon's character and his girlfriend having sex and the guy, Ned i think who is already dead above them. In this scene, after they have had sex, the girl leaves and Bacon is by himself with a course and we pretty much know a killer to more than likely. He is laying in the bed getting ready to light a joint when something drips from the bunk above him (this happens to be where Ned is dead) could be blood, our attention is drawn to that for a split second, and then BOOM! a hand from underneath the bed grabs him, and an arrow from under the bed starts to emerge through his throat! That split second of diversion is classic horror at it's best. An audience waiting for something to happen and then being diverted momentarily to something else, them grabbed back to the kill in a another second. Sort of like the thrill of a roller coaster ride to me. My other favorite scene is the final scene where we discover the killer, but at times I feel it is drawn out and it drags on a bit. I guess sometimes it depends on my mood. But it is still a great scene.
I struggled with my rating for this film a bit. But in the end given what this first film has given the genre I had to go with an 8/10.

great insight lgw! yeah I have to say the bacon death scene was great when i was a kid it made me check under my bed no lie.. that fx's that savani did with taht scene was so fast and great. but to me the movie was a bore the chase was too damn long and boring, I liked f13th part 4 you know the one with a young tommy jarvis, that one didnt have a long boring chase scene and kept the killing going strong in that one. and seeing Tommy spying on the neighbors out his window was classic!

*** Spoiler Alert ***
Just incase there is someone here who hasn't seen this movie.
Perhaps it is redundant to have a thread about one of the purest examples of slasher movie ever created. As a teenager I preferred Part II to Part I. But having watched each several times over recent months I now have a much higher regard for the original.
With the exception of the lead role (Amy Steele in F13 Part 2 is amazing) pretty much everything about Part 1 is superior to the sequel. Foremost is it builds a sense of dread better than Part 2. Two of my favorite scenes are:
- The figure barely seen in the cabin as the storm is beginning to build. The prankster counselor makes the mistake of checking things out. The shadowed cabin is disturbing the way it is shot.
- The second female who uses the bathroom toward the finale. The view of the back shower curtain and overhead light barely moving, suggesting the killer is in there, just freaks me out.
And then you get Betsy Palmer. This is the greatest example of strategically casting against type. Even before I knew who she was, just seeing this warm grandmotherly type revealed as the killer was quite a shocker.
The gore scenes from Savini are top notch. The decapitation is off the charts. And the final jump with Jason startles me no matter how many times I have seen it. 100? God only knows. It is one of the most expertly-timed and edited scares in the history of cinema.

It may not be the majority opinion, but I always preferred watching part III to I. There's just something so colorfully cheesy about III, plus the long, tense finale rocks hard.
But I agree with you Dan, the original is so hard to beat for pure slasher nirvana. Kids + woods = murders. Also, I don't think enough is made of Madfredini's score, which in my opinion takes the film into another realm. Can you imagine F13 without it? It perfectly complements the proceedings (hey, when you can make the CREDITS scary - you're a talented composer).
