I thought it would be a neat idea to see what you guys thought of this. I will post sort of an in depth mini review of film and then we can have a discussion. This will be a trial one, if it goes over well i will keep doing it if not, then i won't waste our time...LOL. Just something we can pull ideas from and discuss certain points about. let's see how it goes.

this film is amazing. given the fact that it was made with little money ($320,000), in 4 weeks, a score that was done in 3 days, and with actors that were virtual unknowns and a director/writing team that only other film had gotten mediocre reviews from critics (Assault On Precinct 13) this film set a standard in film making that has really yet to be challenged. the character development in the film is great. carpenter and hill made the teenagers likable, Laurie, Annie, and Linda are all typical friends who are babysitter, cheerleaders, etc that got to a midwestern high school, likable and each ones weakness in personality compliments each of the other's personality...sort of like how real friends are. this really brings the audiences in to LIKE the characters and not want anything to happen to them, unlike a lot of other films where you may root for the bad guy, this film you don't do that, you have a genuine care for the lead characters. the camera-work was awesome. with being on a budget the crew found innovative ways to use lighting, and the steady-cam to utilize what they had. and it worked. the opening scene was fantastic. we get a glimpse through a killers eyes and then we see it's child, what a set up for a film! pure genius. use of low light and shadows to hide )the shape" as carpenter always refers to myers was genius, knowing that the less you show your big scare the more you will scare. the acting was also very good. for unknowns they did very well. launching a career for jamie lee and p.j soles (linda)was a fun character and although she "totally" says that too much it was what her character was about. and i loved it. not to mention that having the awesome donald pleasence in the film. although in the first film he doesn't have a huge role, he does have a profound role and he is such a fine actor he was the best person for that role. hard to believe that Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee both turned down that role. I am glad they did. my favorite scenes would be: 1st was the scene where bob gets killed. and myers is looking at him like he was fascinated by what he had done. that scene always has stuck with me. my other favorite part is basically the last 15 mins of the film with laurie and myers facing off. the best 15 mins of any film. i give this without a doubt a 10/10 it has a few minor glitches, but it set so many standards and i can't deduct. carpenter really put his heart into this film as did the entire cast and crew. and that really shows and that is why it has lasted as a classic in my opinion.

My favorite part of this movie has to be when Michael Myers is always sneaking around and hiding behind the bushes and he is just creepy and I love the mask . I know it is just a william shatner mask but it is creepy . I think that movie is great . I think it was one of my favorite slasher movies.

I know it is just a william shatner mask but it is creepy . I think that movie is great . I think it was one of my favorite slasher movies. funny thing about the mask they had two to choose from a clown mask or the shatner one. just think if they would have went with the clown mask the entire dynamic of the film would have been changed and it may not have been the sleeper hit that it was and the horror genre would have had to wait even longer for the spark to get the major film companies on the bandwagon to support films. your comment about the mask just made me think of that. the shatner mask was alter in some minor ways though to make it look better. the hair was fluffed a bit, the eye holes were made larger, and it was spray painted whiter to give it the eerier ghostly appearance. which really helps it in those shadow shots carpenter does where myers just appears out of the shadows.

I watched "The Demon" last night and I have to say if you have not seen it you have to. I am sure that carpentar stole the whole Myers idea from this movie... but JC made it a hell of a lot better!
as for the mask they did thr right thing.. to get shatner mask and paint it white and rat tail the hair was pure genius! very creepy and no expresion what so ever.

i know the original idea actually came from another person. where he got the idea i have no clue. Carpenter has always said he got his inspiration from Black Christmas and Psycho for his film. but you could be right he may have seen that films as well. i haven't seen it, and i know i wouldn't be able to find it..LOL
carpenter and hill have such a unique writing style that they can turn a lot of nothing into a masterpiece if the opportunity. although they were not happy with the sequel to the film, most fans liked it pretty well. they NEVER intended this film to have a sequel when they filmed it. it was just supposed to end. sort of interesting.
as for what DB said about pleasence i feel he is highly underrated. he was great although in this film he really didn't play a huge role, it wasn't until the sequel that fans really got to see dr. loomis's character and the development of it. that is one thing about the sequels that have done that character justice is making dr. loomis a grand character who we love. some of the other characters have become a little cartoonish in the sequels. (myers included).

Carpenter pretty much got the idea of Halloween from Black Christmas. If you own the Critical Mass DVD of Black Christmas watch the special features and it will explain it all.

i did a little research about this film the demon. it came out in 1981, well after Halloween, so it would be the one who used elements from Carpenters film, not vice versa...so Riff your parallels were definitely there, just the Demon's writers used Halloween as an inspiration.

For those of you who don't have the Black Christmas DVD I'll post the video in a few days. very cool. haven't seen it in a long time. so many people forget about that movie too, since halloween has reached icon status in mainstream horror now. perhaps when i view it again we can do a discussion of black christmas like we did with halloween? if anyone would be interested, just let me know.

I was hoping to post it soon and tried to do it today but I have to use dial-up for now and won't be able to use a high speed internet connection until next week so I'll try and post it then. If anyone wants to see the short clip about the director from BC talking about Halloween and how Carpenter got the idea let me know and I'll post that tomorrow cause it won't take long to upload using dial-up.
