An unknown airplane is flying over alaska, and not responding to the U.S. The U.S. fears that it is the soviets coming to spy on them or worse, so they give the aircraft a chance to identify itself, but it still does not respond. The U.S. now decides that they must shoot down this aircraft. Little did they know it was caring nuclear weapons, and when it hit the ground it created an enormous explosion. This explosion helped awaken the sleeping, prehistoric, giant known only as .......GAMMERA! ...Now the destruction of the world begins as this super turtle searches for his only food, which is fire. You get to see this monster destroy all sorts of buildings and even a ship.
The film was made in 1965 and it is very low budget, but I think that adds most of the fun to the whole movie. You will know right away that Gammera is nothing but some guy in a turtle suit with small models all around him. This will either make alot of people hate this movie or just make you love it. This is one of my first Kaiju (big monster) films, and I love it. I'm planning on buying and watching alot more of these films. Gammera is just one of the funnest films I have watched in a while. Sure the acting, special effects, and dubbing is not really that good, but there is just somthing about this film that draws me in. These kinds of films are sort of hard to describe, but I find myself loving it even though most of the models look like toys. I think its just the whole concept and idea of a giant monster walking around and destroying stuff that makes films like Gammera so fun to watch. If you like older, low budget, black & white films with crazy stories and plots to them, then you should definitely check out Gammera.
Synopsis:A nuclear explosion in the far north unleashes Gamera, the legendary flying turtle, from his sleep under the ice. In his search for energy, Gamera wreaks havoc over the entire world, and it's up to the scientists, assisted by a young boy with a strange sympathic link to the monster, to put a stop to Gamera's rampage.
[The Good] The whole feel of the film is just great. Also, seeing Gammera wreak havoc on people is the very best part. There is just to much stuff I like about this film.
[The Bad] The acting is not very good at all, and sometimes the dubbing is not very good either. Besides that nothing is really bad, unless you count all the models that look extemely fake, but thats something I personally like about the film.
Gammera: The Invincible gets an 8/10! ;D
Sorry, I guess Im a sucker for these types of films.
This film is also very easy to get and you get it here at www.oldies.com for around $6.00 or $7.00 brand new.
